Russian Envoy Urges UN to Interfere

08.08.2008 10:01

Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin claimed at an extraordinary meeting the Security Council that the Council should play its role in settlement of the conflict in South Ossetia. According to him, the Security Council should demand from Georgia to immediately seize fire and start negotiations, it “cannot stay indifferent when peaceful people die”.

Churkin pointed out that Georgia should “come to its senses and return to the talks”. The Russian Ambassador to the UNO said that “the credibility of the Georgian leadership has been completely undermined as a result”.

"It is clear now why Tbilisi permanently evaded the signing of a nonuse-of-force agreement. It was a key element of the UN SC and RF demands”, the Russian diplomat said.
