Russian-US Relations Are at Historical Minimum – Tillerson
The Russian-US relations are at historical minimum, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said. The diplomat did not rule out that relations between Moscow and Washington may deteriorate further.
"During my first visit to Moscow in meetings with President Putin, I said that relations between Russia and the US are at historical minimum and it could get worse", Tillerson told reporters.
According to him, Moscow and Washington should concentrate their efforts on maintaining stability in their relations and refrain from open conflicts. Tillerson believes that, first of all, the parties should resolve issues of mutual interest, for example, the fight against terrorism.
"We've chosen the theater in Syria as a place in which we test our ability to work together. We share the common view of ISIS (an extremist group, outlawed in Russia) as a threat to both of our countries and so we are committed to the defeat of ISIS and other terrorists organizations", Tillerson said.
He added that the lifting of sanctions against Moscow will become possible after the implementation of the Minsk agreements.
At the same time, Tillerson did not say that for two years Kiev has not been fulfilling the most important provisions of the agreements, in particular, the dismantling of illegal military formations and the adoption of a law on the amnesty of combatants. The Russian authorities have repeatedly stressed that Moscow is not a party to the internal Ukrainian conflict.
