Russia Expects United States Will Force Ukraine to Implement Minsk Agreements
Moscow hopes that US President Donald Trump, during a meeting with Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko, will point out to the Ukrainian leader the need to comply with the Minsk Agreements, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.
"We expect that these high-level contacts will be used by our American counterparts to send a strong signal to Kiev about the need to implement the Minsk Accords", Peskov pointed out. "Washington is well-aware of the genuine state of the Ukrainian peace process, and Washington, if it wishes so, it can easily study all the details and obligations imposed on Kiev under the Minsk agreements, as well as other things", he added.
At the same time, the press secretary of the Russian president stressed that the scheduled meeting between Donald Trump and Pyotr Poroshenko "concerns bilateral US-Ukrainian relations, as it is the sovereign affair of both countries".
It is important to recall that the Minsk agreements were concluded in February 2015 during a meeting between Vladimir Putin, Angela Merkel, Francois Hollande and Pyotr Poroshenko.
However, Kiev did not fulfill its part of the agreement. The Ukrainian authorities have not disarmed illegal paramilitary groups. In addition, the Ukrainian parliament did not pass a law on amnesty of persons participating in hostilities on the side of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics.
