"Caucasus - 2016" Army Exercise
About 12 thousand troops, military equipment, aircraft and ships are involved in the strategic command-staff exercises of the Russian Armed Forces "Caucasus-2016" (Kavkaz-2016), which started on Monday, September 5, 2016 on the territory of the Southern Military District.
According to the Department of Information and Mass Communications of the Russian MoD report, the aim of the exercise is to check the level of preparedness of military control bodies to guide mixed units, and provide practice for commanders and headquarters in planning, preparation and conducting of military operations.
The Defense Ministry said that the "Caucasus-2016" will be held from 5 to 10 September at the sites of the Southern Military District, the Black and Caspian Seas. In particular, it is planned to conduct tactical exercises with live firing on ranges "Prudboy", "Sernovodskoe", "Tarskoe", "Dalniy", "Rajewski," "Molkino" and "Adanac".
Russian MoD added that a check of mobilization readiness and unit's territorial defense capabilities, as well as extensive use of air force and the Black Sea Fleet and Caspian Flotilla are planned as part of the exercise.
In total, the exercise will be attended by 12.600 servicemen of the Armed Forces and other security agencies. As well as up to 60 aircraft, helicopters, and 400 pieces of equipment including 90 tanks, 15 warships and vessels of the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla will also take part.
Similarly to the last year's "Center-2015" exercises a situation when the territory of the South-West region of Russia is infiltrated by extremist groups and gangs, whose aim is to commit terrorist acts and destabilization is being simulated. Extremists have external support, which suggests the possibility of them receiving logistics support, arms and equipment delivery by air and sea.
According to preliminary data, the main purpose of the exercise is to test the level of preparedness of military control bodies when managing mixed units during the localization of internal armed conflicts and search&destroy missions against illegal armed groups. Large-scale exercises involving practical testing for commanders and staffs of command should have a favorable impact on improving knowledge of practical use of troops on the battlefield.
The results of the exercise will provide Russian General Staff with the current degree of readiness of military units and formations to conducting territorial defense of Russian Federation.
Meanwhile, at the end of last week NATO countries started a series of "pre-emptive maneuvers" aimed at countering Russian "military activity" in the south-western strategic direction. The exercises "Caucasus-2016" will take place against the background of similar activities in a number of countries of Eastern Europe, as well as in Ukraine and Georgia.
