Russian Units on Alexandra Land Almost Deployed
According to the commander of the Russian Northern Fleet Admiral Vladimir Korolev, the deployment of Navy units on the island of Alexandra Land, a part of Franz Josef archipelago, is almost completed.
"Today we've almost finished creating units on Franz Josef Land on the island of Alexandra Land and are working on the second stage of creating infrastructure on the island Kotelny of New Siberian Islands," - he said.
This year the Joint Strategic Command has been created in the Arctic on the basis of the Northern Fleet. As noted by the Admiral, coastal troops and air defense were greatly enhanced.
In addition, the Admiral said, the Northern Fleet had conducted exercises with elements of combat against aviation and conditional enemy's strike group of ships in the highest latitudes.
"This is new to us. And I must say that our new modern equipment including the new air defense missile-gun complex "Pantsir-C" demonstrated good results. All military exercises have been completed successfully. The coastal missile system, which performed military exercises and destroyed actual targets, also worked well in the high latitudes," concluded the commander.
Let us recall, Russia intends to strengthen its position in the Arctic on all fronts: political and military, and economic-financial. President Vladimir Putin ordered in April to create there a single system of basing of surface ships and submarines of the new generation, to strengthen the border and to create a new state agency to implement Russian policy in the Arctic.
Until the end of 2014, Russia plans to expand its military forces in the Arctic zone. The 99th Tactical Group will be deployed on the island Kotelny, and the 80th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade - in the village Alakurtti, Murmansk region. In addition, radar stations and air direction centers will be deployed on the islands of Alexander Island (Franz Josef archipelago), Novaya Zemlya, Wrangel Island and Cape Schmidt. It is planned to strengthen the border troops of the FSB. By October 2015 the restoring of air defense infrastructure on the Arctic islands is to be finished.
