German Official Says EU was wrong on Ukraine
Europe is to blame for the crisis in Ukraine, German Chancellor Angela Merkel's deputy said on Wednesday.
"It was certainly not smart to create the impression in Ukraine that it had to decide between Russia and the EU," the Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel added.
"But again: That was not and is not a justification to plunge a country into chaos."
Meanwhile, Germany's former chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, a centre-left Social Democrat like Gabriel and a confidant of Putin, suggested that the "fundamental error" lay with the EU, which had "ignored that Ukraine is a culturally deeply divided country".
